Job Opportunity - Principal/Senior Ornithologist

Based from the office in Inverness

About the role

The role involves working with the existing Ecology team on ecological and environmental aspects of diverse projects including national infrastructure projects, renewable energy and other commercial and private projects.

 

As a Principal/Senior Ornithologist, the role will require:

·       The provision of ecological input, design and delivery for a variety of tasks, including desktop studies, vantage point surveys, scoping studies, survey methodology, Ecological Impact Assessments and Appropriate Assessment Reports.

·       Field work and supervision and training of junior staff to solidify skills

·       Project management tasks including programme and financial management and input to tender submissions.

·       Additional ecological survey and assessment competencies and experience of business development, client, and project management, preferably gained in a consultancy environment.

·       Ability to write solid ecological reports, such as EIAR chapters and HRA reports and have at least a basic competency in Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

You will be a skilled ornithologist with consultancy or project management-based experience who is able to demonstrate a range of ornithology survey techniques, including vantage point, black grouse, moorland breeding birds, breeding divers and raptors, as well as experience in working on development and commercial projects. You will easily be able to digest information and provide pertinent and relevant advice to help make the most of projects.  You will have solid reporting skills that ensure outputs are aligned to a client’s and the project’s needs. You will want to make a difference to the team and the business and be able to see the risks and path ahead. You will be organised and interested in enabling others to achieve their goals and to develop their skills.

What are we looking for?

Essential

  • BSc Ecology, Biological Science or equivalent (MSc desirable), and eligible for Associate or Full level CIEEM membership.

  • A proven ecological/ornithological track record

  • Proven ecological/ornithological field skills

  • Excellent bird ID skills and the ability to demonstrate experience in a range of ornithology survey techniques (e.g. vantage points, breeding birds, raptors).  

  • Any licences for working with protected species would be an advantage.

  • Experience of coordinating ecological impact assessments as well as project management and liaising with clients and stakeholders

  • Excellent report writing skills

  • Previous Ornithology experience designing and delivering bird survey programmes

  • Must be willing and able to undertake fieldwork, as required

  • Experience in GIS systems

  • Some experience of a client facing role

  • Fully ICT literate

  • Full driving licence & access to own car

  • Previous consultancy experience

 

Desirable:

  • Specialist skills in other areas would be an advantage; e.g. bats, habitats, otters, invertebrates or aquatic species.  

  • Any experience acting as construction works supervising ecologist (ECoW) or delivering ecological mitigation contracts would be useful.
