Space Hub Sutherland

Nevis Environmental were delighted to become involved in the Space Hub Sutherland project, working alongside a fantastic team to ensure the proposed project is developed with utmost consideration for the designated sites, habitats and plant and animal species found in and around the area.
As part of the project, a comprehensive range of surveys & reports were completed over more than two years to gain a solid understanding of the habitats and the species present.
These surveys included utilising the Nevis specialist in house ornithological team to carry out:
• Breeding and non-breeding season vantage point surveys,
• Raptor surveys,
• Moorland bird surveys,
• Eagle surveys
• Breeding diver surveys.

The results of these surveys were collated into an Ornithology Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) chapter with consultation with the relevant statutory bodies carried out throughout.

Nevis completed protected species and peat surveys across the site, as well as producing the species protection plans and habitat management plans for the development. Peat probing was also conducted by Nevis to inform the Peat Management Plan, written by our inhouse Hydrologist.

Our Principal Consultant produced the Peat and Ecology EcIA chapter and project managed a trusted team of subconsultants who produced the following:
• Carbon balance assessment,
• Deer management assessment,
• Seals assessment,
• Detailed peat depth survey report,
• Peat slide hazard risk assessment.

The results from these assessments were submitted as technical appendices to the EIA report. Space Hub Sutherland was granted planning approval by the Highland Council North Planning Applications Committee on 26 June 2020.

A great result for the local and wider economy, with community benefits, job and supply chain opportunities expected to be generated for the North of Scotland and further afield.

We at Nevis are very much looking forward to the next steps, and will be following the progress of this very exciting project.
